He is the first Muslim to lead a major European capital.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Meet the First Muslim Mayor of London<\/h3>\n<p>Soeren Kern | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatestoneinstitute.org\/8011\/sadiq-khan\" target=\"_blank\">Gatestone Institute<\/a> | May 8, 2016<\/p>\n<p>Labour Party politician Sadiq Khan has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-london-36235828\">sworn in<\/a> as mayor of London. He is the first Muslim to lead a major European capital.<\/p>\n<p>Khan, 45, is the London-born son of Pakistani immigrants. His father was a bus driver and he grew up with seven siblings in a government-subsidized apartment. He studied law, became a university professor and served as chairman of the civil liberties pressure group Liberty. He was elected to Parliament in 2005. Khan\u2019s supporters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-london-36140479\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a> he is the epitome the Muslim immigrant success story.<\/p>\n<p>Khan \u2014 who won 57% of the ballot, or 1.3 million votes, a number which happens to be roughly equal to Muslim population of London \u2014 has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/mayor\/khan-and-goldsmith-go-on-the-attack-as-mayor-election-campaign-hots-up-a3208251.html\" target=\"_blank\">promised<\/a> to be \u201cthe British Muslim who takes the fight to the extremists.\u201d Others are not so sure.
