Iran’s Growing Role in Yemen<\/h3>\r\n

A ceasefire deal<\/a> aimed at ending Yemen\u2019s civil war is collapsing amid disputes between the warring parties over how to implement the agreement. A resumption of hostilities would, according<\/a> to aid groups, accelerate Yemen\u2019s descent into famine and threaten<\/a> as many as 15 million people \u2014 more than half the population \u2014 with starvation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yemen\u2019s four-year conflict is generally viewed as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia, which backs the internationally-recognized Yemeni government, and Iran, which backs tribal-based Shiite rebels, known as Houthis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Iran has long denied accusations that it provides financial and military support to the Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah<\/em> (Partisans of Allah). According to the United Nations, however, Tehran has been supplying<\/a> the rebels with weapons for more than a decade.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
