The results are a harbinger of increased Muslim separatism in Swedish towns and cities.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Erdogan Reaches into Domestic Swedish Politics<\/h2>\n

Sweden\u2019s recent parliamentary elections saw Nyans, a fledgling Islamist party, win between a quarter and a third of the vote in parts of Swedish cities with large numbers of Muslim immigrants. The results reflect Sweden\u2019s failure to integrate many of the immigrants who have flooded the country in recent years and are a harbinger of increased Muslim separatism in Swedish towns and cities. The Turkish government can be expected to use the party to further increase its influence over the Turkish diaspora in Sweden.<\/p>\n

Nyans (Swedish for \u201cnuance\u201d) was established<\/a> in August 2019 by Mikail Y\u00fcksel, a Swedish politician of Turkish origin, to become<\/a> \u201cthe voice of Muslims\u201d in Sweden. The party\u2019s Muslim identitarian platform<\/a> seeks to criminalize \u201cIslamophobia,\u201d prohibit bans on Islamic veils in schools and restrict freedom of expression to outlaw burning the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n

The party also seeks to\u00a0prevent<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the Swedish social service from placing Muslim children with non-Muslim foster parents, require mandatory anti-racism training for police and amend the Swedish constitution to establish a special minority status for Muslims.<\/p>\n

In foreign policy, Nyans\u00a0seeks<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to increase Muslim immigration into the European Union (which it describes as a \u201cChristian club\u201d) and place financial sanctions on EU countries that refuse to accept more refugees. The party is emphatically anti-Israel and wants Sweden and the EU to impose \u201charsh sanctions\u201d on the Jewish state to force it to hand over land to the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Nyans, which\u00a0describes<\/a><\/span>\u00a0itself as Sweden\u2019s only \u201cTurkey-friendly\u201d party, is\u00a0believed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to have close ties to the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an. Indeed, Erdo?an and Nyans appear to be using each other to exert influence on the sizeable Turkish diaspora in Sweden. Erdo?an\u2019s efforts to influence the Turkish diaspora for his own ends can be seen in\u00a0Germany<\/a><\/span>, the\u00a0United States<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Bulgaria<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0Netherlands<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

More than 100,000 people of Turkish origin\u00a0reside<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in Sweden and approximately half of them come from Kulu, a town in T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s Central Anatolian province of Konya. Y\u00fcksel, who was born in Kulu, has sought votes from Turks in both Sweden and T\u00fcrkiye. He has\u00a0campaigned<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in Kulu to encourage Turks there who have Swedish passports to vote for him and other Turkish candidates in Swedish elections.<\/p>\n

Y\u00fcksel, who created Nyans after he was\u00a0expelled<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from Sweden\u2019s Center Party for colluding with the Turkish nationalist\u00a0Grey Wolves<\/a><\/span>, has also served as Erdo?an\u2019s mouthpiece in Sweden. He has, for instance,\u00a0supported<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Erdo?an\u2019s demand that Sweden extradite political opponents of the Turkish president before the country can become a member of NATO. Y\u00fcksel has refused to call the Armenian Genocide a genocide and has endorsed T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s support for Azerbaijan in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Swedish terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp has\u00a0suggested<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that Nyans could be receiving funding from \u201cTurkish sources.\u201d Presently, however, there is no proof that this is the case.<\/p>\n

In the elections held on September 11, Nyans\u00a0ran<\/a><\/span>\u00a0more than 60 candidates in 25 municipalities, three regions and for the national parliament. Nearly all the candidates were Muslims of Turkish, Arab, Balkan or Somali origin. Although the party failed to win a seat in the Swedish Parliament, it achieved notable successes at the local level, especially in parts of Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malm\u00f6 with large Muslim populations.<\/p>\n

In Rinkeby, a district in Stockholm, Nyans\u00a0won<\/a><\/span>\u00a0just under 25% of the vote. In V\u00e4stra Hisingen, a borough of Gothenburg, Sweden\u2019s second-largest city, the party\u00a0won<\/a><\/span>\u00a0over 25% of the vote. In the Roseng\u00e5rd district of Malm\u00f6, the third-largest city in Sweden, Nyans won more than 30% of the vote. Overall, the party\u00a0won<\/a><\/span>\u00a02.1% percent of the total vote in Malm\u00f6, below the 3% threshold for the municipal council. Nyans will be\u00a0entering<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the municipal councils in Botkyrka and Landskrona, smaller towns where the threshold is only 2%.<\/p>\n

Some analysts have downplayed the significance of the gains made by Nyans. Levent Kenez, a Turkish journalist living in exile in Sweden,\u00a0argued<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that even if the party\u2019s electoral results were high in percentage terms in some districts of big cities, the actual number of votes \u201cdon\u2019t correspond to a large number of voters because these constituencies are not heavily populated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others\u00a0said<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the results achieved by Nyans are impressive for a new political party and predicted that it will enter the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, in a future election. Nyans has already\u00a0registered<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to participate in the 2024 elections for the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

During the campaign, Nyans was accused of using \u201cus versus them\u201d disinformation to incite division and attract Muslim voters. The party, for instance, falsely\u00a0claimed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that Sweden\u2019s establishment parties were planning to introduce a ban on Islamic veils in public spaces.<\/p>\n

Nyans also\u00a0allied<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with Shuoun Islamiya (Islamic Affairs), an Islamist website allegedly tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, to organize a controversial media campaign \u2014 using the hashtag \u201cSweden is a fascist state\u201d \u2014 that accused Sweden\u2019s child-protection authorities of systematically kidnapping Muslim children and placing them with non-Muslim foster homes where they are forced to eat pork and drink alcohol.<\/p>\n

Swedish media\u00a0reported<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that \u201cforeign actors\u201d in T\u00fcrkiye interfered in the election by using social media platforms with large numbers of followers to encourage immigrants in Sweden to vote for Nyans. Messages were sent in Turkish and Arabic that incited Muslim immigrants against their host country. A video in Arabic allegedly showed Swedish police kidnapping a Muslim child.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Nyans benefited from a campaign by right-wing provocateurs to burn copies of the Qur\u2019an. In the run-up to the election, Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan, head of Stram Kurs (Hard Line), a far-right, anti-immigrant party, announced a Qur\u2019an-burning \u201ctour\u201d of Swedish cities and towns with large Muslim populations. Paludan\u2019s actions\u00a0sparked<\/a><\/span>\u00a0riots across Sweden. Nyans\u00a0said<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that burning the Qur\u2019an is a hate crime but Sweden\u2019s Social Democrat government\u00a0stressed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that freedom of expression is protected by the constitution.<\/p>\n

In the end, many Muslim voters who supported the Social Democrats in the past appear to have given their votes to Nyans. Some analysts\u00a0said<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that the magnitude of support for Nyans, magnified by Sweden\u2019s fragmented multiparty system, cost the Social Democrats the election. In Sweden\u2019s system of bloc politics, four center-right and conservative parties won 176 seats, while the center-left coalition that includes the ruling Social Democrats got 173 seats. Even if Nyans won seats in only two municipalities, it has had an outsized impact on Sweden\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
