Sweden Closes Muslim Schools for Spreading Islamism<\/h2>\n

The forced closure of two independent Muslim schools in Sweden has cast a renewed spotlight on efforts by Muslim Brotherhood-linked Islamists to radicalize children and establish parallel societies that subvert core Western values.<\/p>\n

The two schools \u2014 Framstegsskolan in Stockholm and Imanskolan in Uppsala \u2014 were closed after the Swedish security service S\u00e4po (S\u00e4kerhetspolisen<\/em>) warned<\/a> that students were being influenced by Islamist ideology and were at risk of being radicalized.<\/p>\n

In its assessment of Imanskolan, S\u00e4po\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that girls were discouraged from participating in school activities and that gender separation was pervasive. S\u00e4po also noted that it was common for Arab students to \u201cexpress negative opinions\u201d towards Swedish society and \u201cexpress radicalized views\u201d and \u201cdeath threats\u201d with impunity.<\/p>\n

The school, where \u201cnon-Arab students\u201d were said to suffer systematic discrimination, and where \u201cArabic is used extensively by students and staff,\u201d \u201cdoes not celebrate\u201d Swedish holidays and \u201cdoes not teach\u201d Swedish as a second language, \u201cdespite the need being extensive.\u201d S\u00e4po also reported that parents and teachers refused to cooperate with the investigation \u201cbecause they felt they risked negative reprisals.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen<\/em>) subsequently revoked the operating licenses of both schools (here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>). In its decision, which affects a combined total of around 300 students, it\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cchildren are at risk of being exposed to radicalization\u201d by \u201cbeing in an environment that advocates societal separatism\u201d rather than \u201crespect for human rights and basic democratic values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although both schools appealed the decision, the Administrative Court in Stockholm (F\u00f6rvaltningsr\u00e4tten<\/em>) recently\u00a0ruled<\/a>\u00a0that they must be closed because they do not meet the \u201csuitability requirements\u201d established by Sweden\u2019s Education Act. Court councilor Eva Furberg\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that the \u201cshortcomings\u201d in the schools\u2019 management circles \u201care serious and of such a nature\u201d that the \u201csupervisory authorities have been justified in revoking their licenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other Islamic schools in Sweden have also been closed due to concerns over radicalization. In December 2019, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate revoked<\/a>\u00a0the license of Safirskolan (also known as Vetenskapsskolan) in Gothenburg after the school\u00a0hired<\/a>\u00a0at least eleven members of the Islamic State as teachers. The new hires included four jihadists who had returned from battlefields in Syria. In May 2019, the school\u2019s former rector, Egyptian-born Abdel Nasser El Nadi, was\u00a0arrested<\/a> on terrorism charges after he illegally transferred<\/a>\u00a0millions of Swedish kroner from the school, which was financed by Swedish taxpayers, to personal accounts in Germany, Malta and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

S\u00e4po\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0El Nadi as a \u201ccentral figure\u201d in Gothenburg\u2019s Islamist milieu, the main \u201crecruiter for violent\u00a0Islamism<\/span>\u201d in Sweden, and the principal reason why so many people from Gothenburg joined jihadist groups in Syria. El Nadi, who\u00a0fled<\/a>\u00a0Sweden to avoid prosecution, eventually\u00a0surfaced<\/a>\u00a0in Turkey, where he apparently received sanctuary.<\/p>\n

In October 2021, the Swedish Schools Inspectorate\u00a0revoked<\/a>\u00a0the license of R\u00f6mosseskolan, which operated three Islamic schools in Gothenburg, after the Somali-born headmaster, Abdirizak Waberi,\u00a0embezzled<\/a>\u00a0more than 12 million Swedish kroner ($1.5 million) in taxpayer money.<\/p>\n

Waberi, who is also the leader of Somalia\u2019s Islamist National Unity Party, allegedly<\/a>\u00a0channeled much of the stolen money to Somalia for charitable projects that were never completed. Swedish media also\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that he spent some of the money on luxury hotels in Kenya and sex clubs in Thailand. Although Waberi denied any wrongdoing, in December 2022, Sweden\u2019s Court of Appeal (Hovr\u00e4tten<\/em>)\u00a0upheld<\/a>\u00a0an earlier District Court (Tingsr\u00e4tten<\/em>) ruling and ordered him to serve four-and-a-half years in prison for embezzlement.<\/p>\n

R\u00f6mosseskolan, which opened in 1988 and catered to around 300 students ranging from pre-school to junior high school, had been under investigation for more than a decade before it was closed. In 2011, a Schools Inspectorate audit<\/a>\u00a0revealed systematic discrimination against girls at the school: It found that teachers were physically abusing girls and \u201cturning a blind eye\u201d to boys bullying girls. A male teacher\u00a0allegedly<\/a>\u00a0told a female student who refused to wear a veil that she would have only herself to blame if she were to suffer sexual assault.<\/p>\n

Subsequent audits of R\u00f6mosseskolan\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0gender-segregated teaching, mandatory prayer times and schoolbooks based on Sharia law. After public funding for the school was\u00a0halted<\/a>\u00a0in June 2021, the Muslim Brotherhood-linked Islamic Federation of Sweden (Islamiska F\u00f6rbundet i Sverige, IFiS<\/em>), described <\/a>as \u201cthe main driver\u201d of Islamist activity in Sweden, stepped in and paid<\/a>\u00a0the teachers\u2019 salaries for June and July.<\/p>\n

Waberi, a prominent advocate of Islamic education, is a mover and shaker in international Islamist circles. He was once a\u00a0vice president<\/a>\u00a0of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe (FIOE), which has been\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cthe overarching organization\u201d for Muslim Brotherhood groups in Europe. Waberi, who has\u00a0served<\/a>\u00a0as chairman of the Islamic Association in Sweden, the Muslim Political Forum and the Islamic Schools of Sweden, is also a member of the board of the Muslim Council of Sweden (Sveriges Muslimska R\u00e5d, SMR<\/em>), which is\u00a0controlled<\/a>\u00a0by the Muslim Brotherhood through the FIOE.<\/p>\n

Swedish media\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that Waberi\u2019s National Unity Party was founded by Muslim Brotherhood operatives who seek to \u201cadvance the global conquest of Islam\u201d and \u201creestablish the Islamic Caliphate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a 2009 documentary \u2014 \u201cThe Battle of the Muslims\u201d (Slaget Om Muslimerna<\/em>) \u2014\u00a0aired<\/a>\u00a0by STV, the Swedish national public television broadcaster, Waberi said that he would prefer to live in an Islamic state where politics are governed by the Qur\u2019an. He also advocated for a strict interpretation of Islam in which females must cover themselves in public, men should be forbidden to hold hands with women, and young people should be banned from listening to dance music.<\/p>\n

In the documentary, Waberi, an enthusiastic\u00a0advocate<\/a>\u00a0of polygamy,\u00a0refused<\/a>\u00a0to distance himself from Islamists like the late Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, who justified wife-beating. \u201cHe is much more knowledgeable about Islam than I am,\u201d Waberi said. \u201cI would never say he is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Swedish newspaper\u00a0Expressen<\/em>, terrorism analyst Magnus Ranstorp\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s overarching objective is \u201call about Islamizing society, creating a cocoon around Muslims, against non-Muslim influences.\u201d He added that penetrating Western education systems is an important objective of the Brotherhood\u2019s strategy. \u201cThe Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups work through the schools because it strengthens ideological convictions and prevents children from being tainted with secular ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers, a\u00a0tireless leader<\/a>\u00a0in efforts to expose public financing of Islamist groups, told FWI that education is one of the \u201cprimary targets\u201d of Islamists. \u201cIt enables them to indoctrinate the next generation, enforces separation from mainstream society and gives them a flow of financial resources to fund other undesirable activities. It is a threat to the cohesion of society and must be stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

In all, six of the eleven Muslim schools in Sweden have now been shuttered due to concerns over radicalization and financial malfeasance. Islamists have reacted angrily to the school closures. Some have\u00a0accused<\/a> Sweden\u2019s government of pushing \u201canti-Islamic rhetoric\u201d and blamed<\/a>\u00a0S\u00e4po for spreading \u201cconspiratorial claims.\u201d<\/p>\n

The leader of Sweden\u2019s Islamist Nyans Party, Mikail Y\u00fcksel,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that Swedish authorities want to \u201ctake away the freedoms and rights\u201d of Muslims. Y\u00fcksel, who has\u00a0close ties<\/a>\u00a0to the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, also\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0Sweden of \u201coppressing immigrants, especially Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n
