Crisis in France: Author Writes on Islamism, Needs Police Protection<\/h2>\n

Islamists<\/span> have leveled death threats against an influential French academic, forcing her to live under police protection after writing a hard-hitting book about the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s strategy to Islamize Europe. Muslim activists have, as expected, denounced her work as \u201cIslamophobic<\/span>,\u201d but some Islamists and non-Muslim leftwing academics have taken the invective to another level by falsely comparing the scrutiny of Islamism<\/span>\u00a0to Nazism.<\/p>\n

Florence Bergeaud-Blackler, an anthropologist at the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS<\/em>), one of the leading research institutions in Europe, is a long-time observer of the\u00a0Islamist<\/span>\u00a0landscape in the West. In January 2023, she published her magnum opus,\u00a0The Brotherhood and its Networks: The Investigation<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Le Fr\u00e9risme et ses reseaux, L\u2019Enqu\u00eate<\/em>), a 400-page book that meticulously dissects the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s efforts to spread Islamism in Europe.<\/p>\n

Far from being an anti-Islam polemic, Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s book \u2014 whose preface was written by Gilles Kepel, a highly respected French political scientist who has\u00a0authored<\/a>\u00a0more than a dozen books about Islamism and Jihadism \u2014 offers a dispassionate and scholarly presentation of the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s history, doctrine, structure, and modus operandi. She rigorously documents how the Brotherhood systematically extends its influence into the heart of Western societies through entryism, a strategy of infiltrating core governmental and non-governmental institutions to propagate its ideology, which Bergeaud-Blackler calls \u201cBrotherism\u201d (Fr\u00e9risme<\/em>) and describes as \u201can intellectual politico-religious project aimed at establishing an Islamic world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bergeaud-Blackler also shows how the Brotherhood and its many affiliated non-governmental organizations have infiltrated key institutions of the European Union to divert millions of euros that were originally intended to fund studies on Islamism in Europe to focus on \u201cIslamophobia<\/span>\u201d instead. She further documents how the Brotherhood has penetrated the French university system to influence future generations.<\/p>\n

Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s book has received significant media attention and many positive reviews. The center-right daily newspaper\u00a0Le Figaro<\/em>\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0her work as \u201cimmensely meritorious\u201d because it \u201creveals how the Muslim Brotherhood, the most secretive of Islamist organizations, succeeded in making the European Union the primary base of their project to conquer the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conservative news magazine\u00a0Le Point<\/em>\u00a0interviewed<\/a>\u00a0Bergeaud-Blackler and boldly titled it: \u201cThe Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s Weapon is Subterfuge.\u201d The classical liberal\u00a0Atlantico<\/em>\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0a lengthy excerpt of her book that explains how \u201cIslamophobia is the refined weapon at the heart of the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s strategy to conquer Europe.\u201d The left-leaning news magazine\u00a0Marianne<\/em>, in a friendly interview with Bergeaud-Blackler,\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe Muslim Brotherhood wants to transform European society to make it Sharia-compatible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The smear campaign aimed at destroying Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s reputation and credibility began in earnest on March 7, when\u00a0Mediapart<\/em>, a leftwing online investigative journal,\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0a hit piece \u2014 \u201cThe Islamization of France: Actors and Sources of a Dangerous Refrain\u201d \u2014 that accused her of \u201cdemonizing political Islam,\u201d \u201ccriminalizing whole sections of French society for whom Islam is a component of their identity,\u201d and \u201cNazism.\u201d<\/p>\n

The essay \u2014 co-authored by Fran\u00e7ois Burgat, a 75-year-old apologist for the Muslim Brotherhood who is known for his radical anti-Zionism, and Souhail Chichah, a Belgian-Moroccan economist who\u00a0doubles<\/a>\u00a0as an Islamist activist \u2014\u00a0compared<\/a>\u00a0Bergeaud-Blackler to Georges Vacher de Lapouge, a 20th century French anthropologist whose racial theories strongly influenced Nazi ideologues and culminated in the Nazi policy of exterminating European Jews.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrance was \u2018threatened\u2019 by the Jew yesterday, by the Muslim today,\u201d Burgat and Chichah\u00a0wrote<\/a>. \u201cIn contemporary racist mythology, the networks of the Muslim Brotherhood are part of the continuation of international Jewry: a devious fifth column.\u201d They accused her of \u201cborrowing from the most uninhibited anti-Semitic rhetoric\u201d which gives \u201cracist expression the alibi of scientific research.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burgat \u2014 a former CNRS research director who is currently the\u00a0president<\/a>\u00a0of the Arab Center for Research and Political Studies in Paris (Centre arabe de recherches et d\u2019\u00e9tudes politiques de Paris, CAREP<\/em>), a group\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0by the Doha Institute and Qatar Charity, which\u00a0supports<\/a>\u00a0Brotherhood networks around the world \u2014 is leading the campaign against Bergeaud-Blackler because her book documents how Burgat and other French academics have been Brotherhood shills for many years.<\/p>\n

Burgat has tweeted or retweeted more than 100 messages explicitly targeting Bergeaud-Blackler. They variously denigrate her work as \u201cProtocols of the Elders of Zion 2.0<\/a>,\u201d \u201cpseudo research that serves Islamophobia<\/a>,\u201d \u201cnauseating<\/a>,\u201d an \u201cintellectual scam<\/a>,\u201d a \u201cscientific shipwreck<\/a>,\u201d and a \u201cparanoid vision<\/a>\u201d riddled with \u201csectarian bias<\/a>,\u201d \u201ccriminalizing innuendoes<\/a>,\u201d and \u201cobsessive anti-Islamism<\/a>.\u201d She is accused of using \u201cdespicable research methods<\/a>,\u201d promoting \u201cthe most radical and reactionary ideas<\/a>,\u201d and seeking the \u201cindiscriminate criminalization of currents of political Islam<\/a>\u201d and the \u201csectarian criminalization of the so-called \u2018Brothers<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

On March 14, Rafik Chekkat, a French-Algerian anti-\u201cIslamophobia\u201d activist,\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0a lengthy review of Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s book on Orient XXI, a French online journal that focuses on Islam and the Middle East and is well known for its anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. He\u00a0compared<\/a>\u00a0Bergeaud-Blackler to \u00c9douard Drumont, a late 19th century anti-Semitic polemicist whose best-selling book, Jewish France (La France juive<\/em>), argued for the exclusion of Jews from French society. Drumont subsequently was a leading protagonist in the\u00a0Dreyfus Affair<\/a>, in which a Jewish French military officer was wrongfully convicted of treason. \u201cFlorence Bergeaud-Blackler shares with Drumont an intention, a form, and a method,\u201d Chekkat wrote, \u201cto unravel the \u2018Brotherhood\u2019 element \u2014 which was once the Jewish element \u2014 in society.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a tweet, Chekkat\u00a0added<\/a>\u00a0that Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s book is \u201ca delirious work, which recycles all the clich\u00e9s about the manipulative, lying and intriguing Jew, applied this time to Muslims. As Edward Said brilliantly noted, \u2018Popular anti-Semitic animosity has passed smoothly from Jew to Arab, since the image is almost the same.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

A day after Chekkat\u2019s article was published, Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s lawyer, Thibault de Montbrial,\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that his client had received death threats and was under police protection. \u201cThe public attacks by Islamists since the release of her book on the Muslim Brotherhood has reached a dangerous level,\u201d he\u00a0tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bergeaud-Blackler told FWI that \u201cthese comparisons of my latest book with Nazism, the extreme right, [\u00c9douard] Drumont or [Georges] Vacher de Lapouge come from academic spheres. They now circulate top-down in the most offensive strata of the internet.\u201d She described the efforts to assassinate her character as \u201cstaggering\u201d and \u201cdespicable.\u201d<\/p>\n

An open letter of support for Bergeaud-Blackler signed by more than 170 academics\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cshe now suffers the fate of the few researchers and scientists in Europe who openly expose the proselytism of the Muslim Brotherhood within the European Union. The Brothers and their allies do not like anything that attracts light to their affairs and are unhappy about the influence that her book enjoys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Belgian-Moroccan anthropologist Fadila Maaroufi, in an article published by\u00a0Atlantico<\/em>,\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that Bergeaud-Blackler\u2019s book \u201chit the nail on the head\u201d and that those who are attacking her are paradoxically validating the thesis of her work. \u201cWhat is at stake is freedom of conscience and academic freedom, which has been undermined for many decades,\u201d she warned. \u201cSilence makes us accomplices.\u201d<\/p>\n
