European Islamophobia Report: Criminalizing Criticism of Islam in the West<\/h3>\n

The latest edition of an annual \u201cIslamophobia\u201d report falsely claims that Muslim persecution in Europe is ubiquitous, and incorrectly portrays Europe as unsafe for Muslims to practice their faith. The report, which attempts to politicize \u201cIslamophobia,\u201d appears aimed at furthering longstanding efforts<\/a> by Islamists to criminalize criticism of Islam in the West.<\/p>\n

The continued publication of these reports, which have been published<\/a> every year since 2015 by a consortium of civil society NGOs under the influence of T\u00fcrkiye, indicates that the Islamist campaign to intimidate Western elites and incite Muslim immigrant populations continues unabated even as support for Islamism is declining<\/a> in the Muslim Middle East.<\/p>\n

The 2022 edition of the\u00a0European Islamophobia Report<\/a>\u00a0(EIR), a 584-page document, purports to present the \u201cstate and tendencies of Islamophobia\u201d in 23 European countries by compiling mostly anecdotal cases of alleged Muslim discrimination into six categories: employment, education, politics, media, internet and justice.<\/p>\n

Like the previous seven annual editions of the EIR, the 2022 edition does not provide a precise definition of \u201cIslamophobia.\u201d Instead, it promotes a highly subjective and expansive notion of \u201cIslamophobia\u201d \u2014 a notion that falsely views any perceived slight as proof positive of pervasive Muslim persecution and victimhood in Europe.<\/p>\n

The EIR is replete with pseudo-scientific terminology such as \u201csubliminal Islamophobia,\u201d \u201cinternalized Islamophobia,\u201d \u201ccontemporary Islamophobia,\u201d \u201cinstitutionalized Islamophobia,\u201d \u201cstate Islamophobia,\u201d and \u201cundirect [sic] Islamophobia.\u201d It warns of \u201csystematic signaling of Islamophobia,\u201d \u201csystemic\u00a0Islamophobic<\/span>\u00a0practices,\u201d and \u201cpotentially Islamophobic situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report complains about \u201cIslam-skeptical narratives,\u201d \u201canti-Islam legitimization,\u201d \u201canti-Muslim propaganda,\u201d \u201canti-Muslim conspiracy theories,\u201d \u201canti-Muslim stereotypes,\u201d and \u201craging Islamophobic battles.\u201d The report also condemns \u201cIslamophobic narratives,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic rhetoric,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic hate speech,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic acts,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic tropes,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic articles,\u201d \u201cIslamophobic content,\u201d and \u201cIslamophobic sentiments.\u201d<\/p>\n

An example of alleged \u201cIslamophobia\u201d woven through the 2022 EIR is the subjective assertion that Ukrainian war refugees have been more warmly received by Europeans than have Muslim migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The EIR claims that the Russian invasion of Ukraine \u201chas uncovered the stereotypical perspective of Europeans vis-\u00e0-vis different kinds of refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the EIR, \u201ccompared to the problematization of the immigration of Muslims, the debate about white, Christian Ukrainians being naturally welcomed in the rest of Europe revealed the deep-seated prejudice of many Europeans.\u201d In fact, legitimate refugees from the Muslim world and Ukraine have, with few exceptions, been warmly received across Europe.<\/p>\n

Another alleged example of \u201cIslamophobia\u201d involves European media coverage of the FIFA World Football Championship, which was held in Qatar in November-December 2022. The EIR asserts that media reports were \u201cIslamophobic and orientalist\u201d because \u201cthere was a stereotypical depiction of Muslim women and their treatment according to the customs of certain nations and societies, which were then attributed to Islam as a religion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EIR also claims that it is \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for European history textbooks to examine the often-violent nature of the Ottoman Empire that occupied parts of Europe for 600 years between the 14th and the early 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Bulgaria<\/strong>, for instance, which was under Ottoman rule for nearly 500 years, the EIR complains that \u201chistory textbooks regarding the Ottoman period still preserve most of their Islamophobic characteristics.\u201d Another alleged case of \u201cIslamophobia\u201d occurred when a Bulgarian television station aired a news program \u2014 \u201cDiplomatic Pressure Upon Media by Turkish Diplomats\u201d \u2014 in which the presenter asked: \u201cThere are twelve Muslim embassies in Bulgaria, all of them can and should have a claim on the religion called Islam, but why, exactly, does the Turkish diplomat enter so deeply into the life of Bulgarian Muslims?\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Denmark<\/strong>, the EIR contends that it was \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for the Danish government to revoke residence permits for Syrian refugees after it determined that it was safe for them to return to Damascus. Another example of alleged \u201cIslamophobia\u201d is that although Muslims comprise roughly five percent of Denmark\u2019s population, Muslims \u201conly occupy 0.15% of the seats in boardrooms and 1.66% of the seats on the board of directors in the 100 largest Danish companies.\u201d The EIR also takes issue with the Danish government\u2019s use of the phrase \u201cnon-Western\u201d for census purposes. The term, readers are told, \u201cis politically constructed and often used synonymously with Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Finland<\/strong>, the EIR claims it is \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for students to be required \u201cto speak only Finnish at school.\u201d The EIR also complains that candidates in parliamentary elections drew attention to Finland\u2019s \u201cgrowing youth violence problem\u201d and argues that \u201cthere is a need for greater cultural understanding\u201d on the part of native Finns.<\/p>\n

The country report for\u00a0France<\/strong>\u00a0was authored by a UK-based specialist on \u201cspatialized Islamophobia\u201d who \u201cfocuses on the omnipresence of Islamophobia across spatial scales.\u201d She asserts that it was \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for President Emmanuel Macron \u2014 whom the EIR brands as \u201cthe world leader of Islamophobia\u201d \u2014 to initiate a crackdown on political Islam, which seeks to replace the liberal democratic order with a new political system based on Islam and the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n

In a basic mathematical error, the EIR\u2019s chapter on\u00a0Germany<\/strong>\u00a0falsely claims that more than 70% of Germans \u201cagreed with the statement that Muslims should be banned from immigrating to Germany.\u201d The actual number was 19%. The EIR also accuses well-known German Muslim reformers, \u201cparticularly Mouhanad Khorchide and Ahmad Mansour,\u201d of contributing to the increase in \u201cIslamophobia\u201d by \u201ccontinuously framing\u201d Islamism as \u201cthreatening, dangerous, and deviant to democratic structures.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Greece<\/strong>, the EIR contends that it was \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for the government to publicly state that \u201cslaughtering animals without anaesthetizing them is unconstitutional and should be forbidden.\u201d It was also \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for the Greek newspaper\u00a0Democracy<\/em>\u00a0to translate into Greek several chapters of Douglas Murray\u2019s recent book \u2014 \u201cThe Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam\u201d \u2014 about the \u201cdisappointing failures\u201d of mass migration and multiculturalism.<\/p>\n

The EIR informs readers that in\u00a0Hungary<\/strong>, 2022 was a \u201crather peaceful year as far as Islamophobic incidents are concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Ireland<\/strong>, the EIR claims it is \u201cproblematic\u201d for the media to \u201cco-locate\u201d terms such as \u201cIslamic\u201d and \u201cterrorist.\u201d It was also \u201cIslamophobic\u201d when Muslims in Irish prisons \u201cfaced jealousy and often bullying\u201d from other prisoners because they were allowed to celebrate Ramadan.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Italy<\/strong>, the EIR brands Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as \u201cIslamophobic\u201d for her\u00a0pledge<\/a>\u00a0to crack down on Islamism and the uncontrolled mass migration that feeds it.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Kosovo<\/strong>, the EIR informs that the most common form of \u201cIslamophobia\u201d is \u201cinternalized Islamophobia,\u201d a \u201cvariant of Islamophobia that often goes unnoticed in public debates because of the normalization of an anti-Muslim mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n

By contrast,\u00a0Malta<\/strong>\u00a0is \u201cvery underdeveloped in Islamophobia,\u201d according to the EIR.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Netherlands<\/strong>, job candidates who mention on their CV that they are active on the boards of Islamic organizations allegedly \u201chave a reduced chance of getting invited to a job interview.\u201d<\/p>\n

The author of the country report for\u00a0North Macedonia<\/strong>\u00a0wrote that she \u201creceived information that when applying for a job, a picture is required in the CV, so women with headscarves have never been called for an interview.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Slovenia<\/strong>, the Russia-Ukraine war \u201cexposed double standards and racism\u201d in the treatment of refugees. The war \u201cshowed that Slovenia and the European Union have more sympathy and more political will to ensure the protection of those fleeing from Ukraine than for refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and other crisis hot spots around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EIR\u2019s country report for\u00a0Spain<\/strong>\u00a0is more of a screed against the so-called far right (the term appears more than 20 times) and efforts to preserve Spanish identity than it is about \u201cIslamophobia.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0United Kingdom<\/strong>, the EIR claims that \u201cIslamophobia pervades all aspects of public and private life, all domains of activity, and all spheres, physical and virtual.\u201d<\/p>\n

German Islam expert Zara Riffler\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0in 2022 that Islamists are deliberately exaggerating discrimination against Muslims in the West to silence critics. \u201cThe main objective is to smash any criticism of Islamism with the Islamophobia club,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n
