Germany\u2019s Woke Government Wavers as Islamists Declare Holy War<\/h3>\n

More than a thousand Islamic extremists recently marched through the streets of Hamburg, Germany\u2019s second-largest city, demanding that the European Union\u2019s most populous and powerful country be reconstituted as an Islamic state governed by sharia. The demonstration, organized by a fast-growing Islamist group called Muslim Interaktiv, was allowed to proceed after left-wing parties in Hamburg\u2019s legislature rejected<\/a> a petition<\/a> by right-wing parties to prohibit the event.<\/p>\n

During the April 27\u00a0march<\/a>\u00a0in Hamburg\u2019s multicultural Sankt Georg district, the Islamists \u2014 mostly young men, but also women in chadors, hijabs, niqabs, and jilbabs \u2014 complained about an alleged surge in \u201cIslamophobia\u201d in Germany since October 7, when Hamas terrorists slaughtered more than 1,000 Israelis.<\/p>\n

Amid\u00a0shouts<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cAllahu Akbar\u201d and \u201cThere is no God but Allah,\u201d the protesters reminded German authorities of their constitutional obligation to ensure justice for everyone. They then described Germany as a \u201cdictatorship of values\u201d and called for replacing it with a caliphate, an Islamic dictatorship in which there is no separation between state and religion.<\/p>\n

The audacious display of Islamist power on German streets cast light on a glaring double standard: On the one hand, the German government continues to trivialize and even express solidarity with the totalitarian challenge to democracy posed by radical Muslims, who openly seek to overturn Germany\u2019s constitutional order; on the other, the government is obsessed with the threats it says are posed to democracy by the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD), the country\u2019s second-largest political party, whose popularity\u00a0is largely fueled<\/a>\u00a0by voters frustrated with the government\u2019s refusal to crack down on those very same Islamists.<\/p>\n

The German government\u2019s laissez-faire approach to Islamism has moved the problem into a taboo zone that has strengthened the Islamists. Some observers argue that if the German government would only take the Islamist threat more seriously, it could instantly solve the populist problem by removing the main issue that makes the AfD so popular.<\/p>\n

But alas, key members of Germany\u2019s government \u2014 and, apparently, many German voters \u2014 are disciples of wokeism, which claims that Islamists are a disadvantaged minority group that must be empowered. At the same time, Germans seeking to preserve their culture against the encroachment of Islamism are branded as right-wing extremists who pose an existential danger to democracy.<\/p>\n

After the Hamburg imbroglio, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser\u00a0declared<\/a>: \u201cIf you want a caliphate, you\u2019ve come to the wrong place.\u201d And yet, just a few weeks earlier, she\u2019d insisted that the real danger to Germany lies not with the Islamists but with the far right. When asked why she considers right-wing extremism to be more threatening than Islamism, she\u00a0replied<\/a>: \u201cIslamism does not want to overthrow the system, right-wing extremists do.\u201d<\/p>\n

A New Islamism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Muslim Interaktiv, along with its close cousins, Generation Islam and Realit\u00e4t Islam, is the vanguard of a new generation of German Islamists who have replaced old-school jihadist propaganda with the fresh battle cry of grievance peddling. While the overall goal \u2014 to Islamize Western society \u2014 remains the same, the new method of adopting the role of an aggrieved minority is more effective because, rather than being overtly illegal, such speech is constitutionally protected.<\/p>\n

Muslim Interaktiv, whose\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0goal is to establish Islam as a \u201ccomprehensive way of life\u201d in Germany, is a successor of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a global pan-Arab and pan-Islamic group that\u00a0seeks to establish<\/a>\u00a0an Islamic caliphate. Although Hizb ut-Tahrir has been\u00a0banned<\/a>\u00a0in Germany since January 2003, the government continues to turn a blind eye to Muslim Interaktiv, which was established in 2020 and opposes Western liberal democracy, women\u2019s rights, and the state of Israel. Muslim Interaktiv has successfully filled a vacuum created after the destruction of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) in 2019.<\/p>\n

The leader of Muslim Interaktiv is a charismatic 25-year-old Ghanaian-German convert to Islam named Joe Adade Boateng (he now goes by Raheem) who is studying at the University of Hamburg to become a teacher. He is adept at using social media and digital networking to propagate victim narratives, a strategy that has made him a superstar within the Islamist subculture.<\/p>\n

In its latest annual\u00a0report<\/a>, Hamburg\u2019s state-security agency warned that Muslim Interaktiv was leveraging social media to find new recruits from among Germany\u2019s disaffected Muslim youth. The group\u2019s leaders have been\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0by security experts as \u201cradical pop Islamists\u201d who \u201cshun beards, drive flashy cars, and hate Israel\u201d and produce professional-looking videos that \u201cappeal to young people via the internet.\u201d Hamburg\u2019s spy chief, Torsten Vo\u00df,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that Muslim Interaktiv is \u201cdangerous\u201d because of its capacity to \u201cincrease the number of Islamists in the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Increasing Base of Support<\/strong><\/p>\n

Muslim Interaktiv and associated groups have mobilized large numbers of followers at public gatherings across Germany. In March 2024, hundreds of Salafists\u00a0gathered<\/a>\u00a0in Hamburg to listen to a speech by Marcel Krass, an influential convert to Islam who,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to German intelligence, had contact with one of the terrorist hijackers in the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n

In February 2023, Muslim Interaktiv\u00a0mobilized<\/a>\u00a03,500 people in Hamburg to rally against\u00a0Koran burnings<\/a>\u00a0in Sweden. In October 2023, the group\u00a0organized<\/a>\u00a0a pro-Palestinian protest during which hundreds of demonstrators carrying Islamist flags attacked police officers with bottles and stones. And in November 2023, more than 3,000 members of Generation Islam \u2014 which, like Muslim Interaktiv, is an offshoot of Hizb-ut Tahrir \u2014\u00a0participated<\/a>\u00a0in a virulently anti-Israel protest in Essen, where they called for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in Germany<\/p>\n

Muslim Interaktiv has a large pool of supporters among younger Muslims in Germany. A new\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from the Lower Saxony Criminological Research Institute revealed that a majority of Muslim students (67.8 percent) agreed with the statement: \u201cThe rules of the Koran are more important to me than the laws in Germany.\u201d Almost half (45.8 percent) believed that \u201can Islamic theocracy is the best form of government\u201d and 51.5 percent agreed with the statement: \u201cOnly Islam is able to solve the problems of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turkish-German Islamism expert Eren G\u00fcvercin\u00a0explained<\/a>\u00a0the seriousness of Germany\u2019s Islamist problem: \u201cThe vast majority of caliphate supporters are not refugees, but German citizens. They are children and grandchildren of immigrants, including those who the German state once \u2018recruited\u2019 as cheap labor. They were born in Germany, attended German schools, then German universities. They cannot be deported. It is not just a failure of integration, but also of education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tepid Responses<\/strong><\/p>\n

On May 4, a group of moderate Muslims in Hamburg led by the chairman of the Kurdish community in Germany, Ali Toprak,\u00a0held<\/a>\u00a0a counterdemonstration to Muslim Interaktiv to defend Germany\u2019s liberal democratic constitutional order against the encroachment of radical Islam. \u201cThe Islamists are babbling about the caliphate and sharia,\u201d he\u00a0said<\/a>. \u201cWe as a civil society shouldn\u2019t put up with that.\u201d In the end, a few hundred people\u00a0showed up<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of Germany\u2019s leading experts on political Islam, Ahmad Mansour,\u00a0lamented<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cdespite the seriousness\u201d of the challenge posed by Muslim Interaktiv, \u201conly a few are upset, while the majority of the country continues to ignore them.\u201d He\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0the \u201cna\u00efve West\u201d against \u201ctolerating everything \u2014 even those forces that would threaten its way of life \u2014 in the name of radical diversity and multiculturalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the mood in the country may now be changing. Germany\u2019s main opposition party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in a stark departure from the years when Angela Merkel ran it, has\u00a0signaled<\/a>\u00a0that it intends to take a much harder line on Islam and migration. CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann recently\u00a0proposed changes<\/a>\u00a0to the party platform that would specify that \u201cSharia does not belong to Germany\u201d and \u201cEveryone who wants to live here must recognize our guiding culture [Leitkultur<\/em>] without any ifs or buts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The CDU is now\u00a0calling<\/a>\u00a0on the federal government to ban Muslim Interaktiv for engaging in anti-constitutional activities. \u201cIt is unacceptable that Muslim Interaktiv is openly agitating on our streets against Jews and against our free way of life,\u201d\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Hamburg\u2019s CDU leader, Dennis Thering. \u201cWe are governed by the Basic Law [Germany\u2019s constitution] and not Sharia law.\u201d<\/p>\n
